Assistant Director, Graduate Business Career Services

Job Description:
The Ivy College of Business Graduate Career Services Office at Iowa State University is seeking a Student Services Specialist III for the Graduate Business Career Services Assistant Director position on the main Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa.
Example of Duties:

  • Drawing on industry experience, serve as a career advisor for full-time graduate business students in the Ivy College of Business, including MBA and specialty master’s degree students, administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni on issues and trends related to employment
  • Manage online portals for internship/rotational programs/job search strategy offerings to increase options for students, which can increase rankings due to higher titles and salaries
  • Functions independently as a subject matter expert in student case management, campus recruiting and professional development
  • Consult and coach individual graduate students and alumni in their internship, career search, and negotiation strategies
  • Develop and implement student and employer programming, including career related fairs and workshops, networking events and special topic seminars
  • Develop and deliver BusAd 592 MBA Professional Skills Development career course/s in collaboration with the Director of Graduate Business Career Services
  • Supervise 1-2 graduate students who provide support for programming
  • Manage employer relationships 
  • Interact daily with prospective and current students, as well as with faculty and staff
  • Collect, evaluate, and report internship/employment data and assist in dissemination to stakeholders
The successful candidate will possess strong leadership abilities along with excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate will be capable of independent judgment, taking initiative, and working collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals.
Graduate Programs must find innovative ways to engage MBA and specialized degree seeking students in actively developing their interpersonal networking skills, their ability to sell their distinctive competencies in a highly-competitive job market, and to stand out as an internship or job candidate. Development of new programming or career course teaching methods to engage students in their own career development has become increasingly critical and will be required for the incumbent in this position.
Lead Career Advising for Student Groups
  • Advise current graduate business students, alumni and faculty in career management and decision making, career path information, and the internship and full-time job search by providing comprehensive career consulting strategies utilizing multiple tools and technologies and training on usage of customer relationship database/recruiting systems
  • Promote relevant career opportunities to qualified candidates
  • Translate self-assessment results
  • Review/edit resumes, cover letters, and other career documents and LinkedIn profiles
  • Oversee coaching on interviewing and negotiation practices for student group
  • Develop and lead career-related presentations on and off campus
  • Identify solutions to job seeking situations of varying complexity
  • Meet with prospective graduate business students to discuss career development aspects of Iowa State graduate business programs as part of the admissions committee
Program Design and Delivery
  • Manage online portals for internship/rotational programs/job search strategy offerings to increase options for students, which can increase rankings, due to higher titles and salaries
  • Design, develop, and deliver creative career-related programming to include company speakers, personal branding, career transitions, mock interviews, negotiation strategies, international student hiring, consultant case interviewing, and other career development workshops for MBA and specialized masters students
  • Develop and deliver other employer engagement activities
  • Present to student clubs, organizations, and association
  • s on topics related to professionalism, job/internship seeking and other career-related subjects
Lead Graduate Business Professional Development Courses
  • Develop, update, and deliver BusAd 592 “MBA Professional Skills Development” career course, which is required for full-time Iowa State MBA students in their first semester, in collaboration with Director of Graduate Business Career Services
  • Create and deliver an equivalent course for specialized masters students in the College of Business, as needed
Employer Relationship Management Support
  • Assist the Director of Graduate Business Career Services with cultivating, developing, and managing relationships with employers
  • Travel to employer locations that host interns and hire Ivy College of Business Graduate students to cultivate employer partnerships
Student Outcomes Survey Administration Support
  • Assist Director of Graduate Business Career Services in creating and administering survey tools to collect internship, at-graduation employment, and post-graduation employment outcomes for reporting and program ranking purposes

Level Guidelines
• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a related field
2-3 years of experience as a talent acquisition recruiter or similar
An understanding of the expectations and requirements of employers and their hiring practices
Experience working with Applicant Tracking Systems
Experience which demonstrates knowledge of resume preparation, interviewing, career management, and job search theory and practice
Previous experience with college students and/or career services
