The University of Virginia Darden School of Business seeks a Managing Director, Employer Engagement and Recruiting to join its Career Development Center.  With strong momentum in the residential MBA and professional MBA formats and recent innovations and industry-leading results, the Managing Director joins Darden at an exciting time.  Darden is ranked the #1 Faculty (The Princeton Review, 2017-2021), #1 MBA education experience in the United States (The Economist, 2011-2019), and #1 US Public MBA Program (Bloomberg BusinessWeek, 2019).


Darden's Career Development Center (Career Center) provides over 1,100 graduate business students (Full-Time MBA, Part-Time MBA, Executive MBA, and Specialty Masters) with one-on-one professional career advising, lifelong career management skills, and exceptional internship/post-degree job search support.  The team empowers students on their career journey, and its commitment to student success has no bounds.  The department thrives on helping students maximize their employment opportunities.   


The Career Center annually engages hundreds of companies that recruit and hire students for careers in consulting, investment banking, marketing, general management, high tech, private equity/venture capital, and others.  Many more employers open MBA positions to Darden talent, often leveraging virtual recruiting technologies and platforms.  In 2021, the center managed over 1,600 job postings and hosted nearly 440 on-Grounds recruiting events.  Over 450 unique companies employ graduates from our degree programs.  Our employer engagement model helps our corporate partners achieve their hiring goals and fosters long-term relationships between organizations and the school.


The primary responsibility of the Managing Director of Employer Engagement and Recruiting is to develop and implement a strategy for best-in-class employer experiences and create corporate relationships that lead to job opportunities – aligned with the interests of the Darden student body.  This role leads interactions with Fortune 500 companies, early-stage startups, and other organizations to cultivate their interest in hiring at Darden.  In addition, the Managing Director seeks to establish relationships with new companies and sectors to ensure a robust portfolio of opportunities.  This work along with the students’ independent job searches enhances and expands recruiting at Darden. 


The Managing Director is a senior leadership position in the career center and serves on the center's leadership team.  The position reports to the Assistant Dean of the Career Development Center.  The Managing Director works closely with various internal and external constituents to plan, promote, lead, and measure results for recruiting and employer engagement activities facilitated through the department.  The role also inspires the team and the center to create first-class recruiting experiences for employers and Darden students. 

The role also provides leadership to advance strategic corporate relationships, partnering across the enterprise.  As hiring talent is a primary motivation for many firms, the Managing Director coordinates activities to ensure seamless and high-impact engagement for employers.  This role cultivates, solicits, and stewards corporate partnerships resulting in sponsorships for Darden and its student clubs and organizations.  Through the partnership efforts, employers strengthen their on-Grounds presence and brand while recruiting Darden talent. 

This position leads the Employer Engagement & Recruiting team and has direct supervision of four Assistant Directors/Associate Directors.

Responsibilities Include:



  • Set clear strategy for employer engagement and all recruiting operations and advise companies on the best practices to reach their hiring goals. 
  • Set strategy for each sector in partnership with Senior Directors (industry career coaches) that identifies world-class employers, student needs, company needs, and forward-looking trends to position Darden and Darden students for success. 
  • Manage activities, platforms, and information for those firms that follow a just-in-time, ad hoc, or other unstructured recruiting practices. 
  • Share information gained through company outreach with students, career center staff, and others at Darden to educate them about MBA recruiting, company, and job market trends. 
  • Leverage expertise to support employer campaigns and initiatives for job postings and other corporate relations activities. 
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of industry-related recruiting trends and work across stakeholders to remain current on skills sought after by employers, labor market issues, and immigration and employment laws. 
  • Establish pipeline and build new corporate partners and career opportunities in multiple geographic US and international markets aligned with student needs and interests currently and prospectively. 
  • Source and market job postings for international students (students without US work authorization) and partner with employers to advance understanding of international student hiring protocols and opportunities. 



  • Interact extensively with hiring representatives (including Darden/UVA alumni, HR, and executive sponsors) to understand their goals and help develop plans to use Darden resources to successfully engage students. 
  • Support the cultivation of Darden alumni in key firms, functions, or industries as a part of the corporate partnership model. 
  • Network with company recruiters on- and off-Grounds to deepen relationships, stay current on business issues, and assess Darden's brand image among employers. 
  • Leverage relationship management skills, including communication and advocacy, to establish strong connections with stakeholders. 
  • Promote Darden and inspire employers to network with, interview, and hire Darden students. 
  • Deploy systems and technology to ensure relationship management tracking. 



  • Maintain leadership and knowledge of MBA recruiting processes and practices. 
  • Implement procedures and standards for account management. 
  • Manage the master recruiting calendar.  Work with the Full-Time MBA and Working Professionals MBA Program Offices to align academic schedules, career activities, and other co-curricular events.  Partner to ensure the calendars reflect a clear vision for both structured and unstructured recruiting events. 
  • Communicate recruiting processes and expectations to students as a part of their career search. 
  • Oversee the planning of and logistics of all corporate engagement activities. 
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor a process for managing talent acquisition and new employer inquiries. 
  • Seek opportunities to integrate career center corporate engagement efforts into existing Darden activities. 
  • Create, monitor, and report metrics related to the success of business development/employer engagement and recruiting efforts. 



  • Supervise, evaluate performance, and oversee the professional development of the Employer Engagement & Recruiting team.
  • Inspire and motivate team members. 



Education and Professional Experience

  • Master's degree required.  Master of Business Administration (MBA) from a leading business school preferred.
  • At least ten years of experience is required, preferably with MBA hiring processes or university career services, HR, corporate recruiting, and talent acquisition. 
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team of professionals in a matrix leadership environment.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams, analyze resources, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to get things done individually and through others—attention to detail and ability to follow through on commitments.
  • Proven ability to develop productive long-term relationships with faculty, staff, professional degree students, and outside stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and successfully partner with, engage, and support professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • High emotional intelligence, empathy, integrity, responsiveness, and collaborative ability.
  • Strong communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Skype/Zoom/FaceTime, and LinkedIn are required.  Skills desired include an aptitude to learn new technologies, ability to tell a story with data, curiosity towards using social media, and experience with CRM systems, VMock, GradLeaders, 12Twenty, or other university career systems. 
  • Belief in the mission of the Darden School and a passion for the University of Virginia.


This position is located in-person in Charlottesville, VA and requires moderate travel to attend off-site events or conferences and meet with employers (including travel between Charlottesville and Rosslyn, VA locations).  The ability to work nights and occasional weekends during the peak recruiting season (September to November and January) is also required.
